Clueless at the top – GOP needs wake-up call

After getting the latest GOP e-mail, I decided it was time to unsubscribe. It was loaded with recycled one-liners and leftover rhetoric from the presidential campaign. Here are some quoted examples:

  • As a lawyer, Obama once sued the same financial institutions on behalf of radical groups like ACORN for failing to use leftist social engineering criteria for lending instead of an applicant’s ability to repay a loan.
  • And now, anyone who dares speak out against or challenge Obama’s ultra-liberal agenda, such as the hundreds of thousands of patriots who attended last week’s Tea Parties, should expect to be labeled “unhealthy” by this Adminstration.  Now, THAT is arrogance!
  • You know that Barack Obama’s hubris and charisma conceal the inexperience and lack of wisdom that our country cannot afford in its president.

When you have a popular president and an economic crisis this same old junk just doesn’t work. Read the rest of this entry »

Clinton Administration Redux

Next in a million part series. Leon Panetta was designated the next CIA Director today. Probably not a bad pick, yet it is another sign to the Obama faithful that “change we can believe in” means an administrations that looks like a replay of Bill Clinton’s team. Obama has shown how shrewd of a politician he is – moving to the center with his Cabinet picks and policy proposals. If only Republicans were as savvy.

Tony Snow, RIP

Tony Snow was clearly the best press secretary to work for President Bush, and probably among the best to have held that job. He was eloquent, quick on his feet, and when you listened to him you didn’t get the feeling that you were being snowballed. He earned the respect of the Washington press corps, which is in itself a monumental feat. In an age where television and new media are the dominant means of communication in politics, he was a master. Washington, the media, and political junkies are all worse off without him.

One-term McCain?

Peggy Noonan suggests in a column today that John McCain can gain even more ground in this election by announcing he will only serve one term. The argument goes that it would be an above-the-board kind of move, enabling him to take on issues he wouldn’t be able to otherwise. If he is already committed to not running for re-election, she argues, then the public may see him as more honest and committed to a higher purpose.

While there are of course advantages to having a president that is not bothered with re-election, you unfortunately would get what we have right now: an ineffective lame duck. While the idea of a six-year, one-term limit has been argued by other Constitutional reformists, it would be of no benefit to McCain in this case. It would reinforce the idea that he is too old to be president – something he is fighting hard right now to overcome.

Promising to be a one-term president would make McCain less appealing, not more. It would give Obama, Clinton, and the Democrats another target. Instead of a charging reformer who will clean up Washington, they will paint him as unequipped for the long haul: something McCain can’t afford in what will be a difficult race. Americans want a president who they believe is up for the toughest job in the world. Voters will wonder about the effectiveness of a president be who is already announcing his retirement date before he even takes office.
